Serafim F. Costa “Serf”, age 70, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2016, surrounded by family. He was born on December 29, 1945, in Sao Miguel Azores, Portugal to the late Antonio DaCosta Malhao and Francisca Furtado Fontes.

Serf moved to the United States in September of 1956 where he settled in Newark, New Jersey. While in Newark he worked as a mechanic before owning his own Gulf Gas Station and after that he spent time working for Apollo Rigging where he was a truck driver and mechanic. He met the love of his life, Eduarda Moniz, in 1960. They began to date in 1962 and on July 15, 1967, they were married. They remained happily married until the time of his passing. Even though most of her cooking always required “more pepper” and she seemed to always forget to put out the tools at dinner time, that’s what Serf called the eating utensils. He later settled with his family in Keansburg, N.J. in 1979 before moving to Newnan, GA in 2003 where he retired as a Truck Driver/ Owner Operator in 2008. Serf had a kind heart and was always ready to give the shirt off of his back to help others. He always made sure to put his family before himself. Serf was a fantastic cook and whether it was a part of a house or car if it was broken Serf could fix it. Along with family and friends, Serf enjoyed the beach, fishing, nascar, Chevrolets, Sunday dinner with his family, his Portuguese heritage, and most of all the food that came from his Portuguese heritage.

Serf is survived by his wife Eduarda Moniz Costa, son Stephen (Patricia) Costa, and daughter, Susan Costa. He is also survived by grandchildren, Randy (Alexandria) Costa, Alyssa Couch, Austin Couch, great-grandchildren, Rory Costa and Dean Costa, all of Newnan. Serf was the youngest of nine children and the only surviving sibling is his sister Joanna Barbosa. Serf is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and a long list of loving family members.
