Scott Hugh Mitchell passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, in Salisbury, North Carolina.
He was born November 23, 1920; you do the math. He was a naive and innocent little fellow. When reality struck, he was married, had six offspring, a mortgage, three cars and a monthly gasoline bill close to the national debt.
Education and experience had little effect on his path through a life of ups and downs. Dartmouth, class of 1943, and its graduate school (Tuck) with a masters degree in 1946, led to 37 years with General Electric in various positions and locations. Three years in WWII, two of those overseas in the South Pacific with the 5th Army Air Force, did little to prepare him for fatherhood.
His surviving offspring and their spouses in order by birth: Martha M. Grote (husband Michael) Columbus, Ohio; Scott H. Mitchell, Jr. (wife Cindy), Los Angeles; Beth A. Mitchell, Salisbury, NC; Stuart D. Mitchell (wife Marty ), Cincinnati, OH; R. John Mitchell (wife Michelle),Delray Beach, FL; and Keith R. Mitchell, Salisbury. Scott always felt his one achievement was that all six offspring received a college education, three with Masters Degrees.
Scott’s wife, Mary Elizabeth Marks passed away in 1998.
Scott enjoyed sports all his life: skiing, skating, golf and tennis (his favorite). He was fortunate to be tennis coach at Catawba College, Salisbury, North Carolina, after retiring from General
Electric. He always felt he had a better time than the players in those 10 years.
His last memories are of his golf and tennis friends, his wife, six wonderful children and his talented grandchildren: Tara L. Grote (NYC), Lindsay K. Grote (Denver), Christopher M. Grote (London), Cynthia A. Grote (Columbus, OH), Katie Stoner-Mitchell (Los Angeles), Scotty H. Mitchell III (NYC), and Misty Lane (Delray Beach).
