Scott Hertel, 47 of Centralia passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017 at SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born July 28, 1969 in Centralia, son of Paul F. Hertel and Sonia (Cole) Hertel.
Scott was the beloved husband of Alicia Snyder. Scott & Alicia enjoyed 30 years together, celebrating their St. Patrick’s Day anniversary together each year. They were the proud parents of Dylan Hertel of Centralia and India Hertel of Carbondale. Scott is survived by his wife and children as well as brothers & sisters: Jeff & Stacie Hertel of St. Louis, Missouri, Greg & Kristy Hertel of Salem, Raziel & Nicole Hertel of Green Bay, Wisconsin & Lauri Hoffee Hertel of Salem; several beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews, & a family-in-law who cherished his as well. He is also survived by his Grandmother, Miriam Hertel of Edwardsville.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers Paul Hertel Sr. & Gene Cole and his grandmother Gladys Taylor, and his cat Tigger. Scott attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Geography with many honors. He pursued graduate studies in geography serving as a research assistant during his Master’s studies. Scott was active politically and served as an election judge & voting registrar.
Environmental causes were especially important to him. Scott was an avid French & Indian War reenactor, a proud member of The Ragger Raiders as well as Milice de Sainte Famille. Scott was a trapper at heart and enjoyed trapping locally and received Top Lot honors. He served as a board member of the Illinois Trapper Association. Other passions included good music, public radio, gardening & recycling. Scott enjoying camping, canoeing, hiking & cooking wonderful food for the people he loved.
