Kenansville – Mrs. Sarah Roland of 291 Perry Miller Rd. transitioned to her heavenly home Thursday, January 14, 2021 at Rex Hospital. Raleigh, NC.
Sarah Elise Pauline Miller Roland, the eighth child of the late Perry and Ida Bryant Miller was born on Tuesday, February 28, 1933. She was educated in the Duplin County School System in Kenansville, NC and graduated from Elizabeth City State Teacher’s College in Elizabeth City, NC where she received her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education in 1951. She retired from Boston City Schools in 1988 rendering 29 years of service.
She was a faithful member of New Christian Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Rose Hill, NC where she was ordained as a Deaconess, sang in the choir, in charge of the announcements, and taught Sunday school.
Sarah leaves many cherished memories to her children, DeQuilla Battle (Grover) of Nashville, NC, James Edward Roland Jr., of Boston, MA, Edith Sumler (Kenneth), Ida Yvonne Williams and Andrea Farrior (Edward) of Kenansville, NC; Godchildren, Gary & Hattie McGee, Perry Gillespie, Anthony Perkins; twelve grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one sister, Millie Miller of Kenansville, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, dedicated son-in-law, Kenneth Sumler, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she has been reunited with her husband, James Edward Roland; siblings, Leroy Miller, David Miller, Allen Miller, Jonathan Miller, Elizabeth Chrome, Cleo Stewart, Ozzie Murphy and Lunell McKinney.
