Sara Carolyn Holloway Beams, 92, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2017. She was born to the late Floyd Huguley Holloway and the late Estelle Avera Holloway on February 9, 1924 in Monroe County Georgia.
She was a 1940 graduate of Dalton(Ga)High School and attended Lagrange College before the advent of World War II. To aid in the war effort, she left Lagrange College and moved to Charleston, South Carolina where she took a job in the Navy Yard. There she met Charles Emerson Beams and they were married in 1945. Charles’ career with General Electric took them to upstate New York where they later settled in the town of Fayetteville outside of Syracuse. They spent 32 happy years raising two daughters and enjoying the small town atmosphere that Fayetteville provided.
Sara was such an avid collector of early American antiques that it prompted husband Charlie to make a custom sign for their home that said “Beams Antiques”. During this period, Sara was an active member of the local and state chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Sara served as state DAR Chairman for various committees during her time in New York.
After his retirement in 1983, Charles and Sara moved to Newnan, Georgia to be near family. Upon settling in Newnan, Sara discovered there was no active DAR chapter. Using her prior experience, she promptly organized the General Daniel Newnan chapter of the DAR. Last October, she was honored as the Organizing Founding Regent during the chapter’s 30th anniversary. Throughout her life, Sara’s kind and caring demeanor served her well in comforting patients and families in hospital settings.
She actively served as a Pink Lady Hospital volunteer in both New York and Newnan hospitals. During retirement the couple were avid Airstream RV enthusiasts and were members of The Top Of Georgia Airstream Park for over 25 years.
Sara loved games of all sorts as well as reading and word finds. She also excelled in knitting, crocheting and flower arranging. Sara is preceded in death by her sister Willene Holloway Watkins, and is survived by her sister Jeanette Holloway Crissey (DeVant), daughters Mary Beams Miller(Jim) and Margaret Beams Kelly(Sam), four grandchildren, Morgan Krueger-Miller(Marie), Melissa Miller, Virginia Hrushka, Matthew Hrushka(Julie) and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins.
