Mr. Samuel Williams, a native of Rayville, LA and a resident of San Diego for over 40 years passed away on June 18, 2015. He was retired from the U.S.
SAMUEL WILLIAMS, affectionately known as “Sam” and “Papa”, was a prayed for baby boy born on January 27, 1928 in Rayville, Louisiana to Isaiah and Essie Mae Williams. His mother preceded him in death when Sam was just a toddler. In September 1936, God sent him another praying mother, Fannie Beatrice Williams. Sam accepted Christ as his personal Savior at a very young age in Rayville, where he also attended Skelton Elementary.
The family later moved to San Diego, California, where Sam attended Dana Jr. High and graduated from Point Loma High School in 1947. Sam always kept busy. While in high school, he worked at Convair and also at a lumber company.
After high school, Sam began working for the United States Post Office and also served as President of the Board of Directors of the Postal Credit Union.
Upon Sam’s arrival to San Diego, while still in his teens, the Williams Family joined Mt.
Sam, who was very active in his community, served on the SEDC Board of Housing and Development. He was dedicated to his fraternal organizations, holding office as Past Master of Gustavaus Thompson Lodge #79 PHRA, and a member of Consistory #91, a 33rd Degree Mason, Past Patron of Ada B. Cleveland Chapter #71 O.E.S. PHRA and Past Exalted Ruler of Clementine McDuff Elks Lodge #598. Sam greatly enjoyed being an involved participant in all of his organizations; however, his most favorite post of duty was at Mt.
On October 26, 1957, Sam united in marriage with Annie R. Bennett. Their union was blessed with two beautiful children.
Sam loved his family unconditionally and they dearly loved him. He adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed Sports of all types, including hockey and was a true Padre and Charger fan. Sam was very soft spoken, yet you knew when he meant business. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Williams; sons, Michael Williams and Gerald L. Williams; both of his parents and his sister, Ophelia Sanders.
On Thursday, June 18, 2015, Samuel Williams passed away quietly at Scripps Mercy Hospital surrounded by family. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of fifty-eight years, Annie R. Williams; two daughters, Alvida Rucker (Lonzo) and Arita Williams, both of San Diego, CA; sons, Barney Williams, Sr. of Las Vegas, NV , Maurice McMihelk (Wanda) and Ronnie Granderson (Mary) all of San Diego, CA; brother, Larry Williams, Sr.; uncle, Joseph Williams; aunt, Rosie Bennett all of San Diego, CA; seventeen grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one goddaughter, Beverly Wells (Joe) of Louisville, KY; caregiver and friend, David Hoult and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, the Mt.
