Our beloved Samuel (Sam) Shorty passed on September 29, 2021. He was 60 years old and a lifetime resident of Farmington, New Mexico. Sam was a veteran, serving with the U.S. Army for 26 years of active/reserve duty and rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He took great honor in serving our country and participated in deployments in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. During his last deployment, he served as Convoy Commander leading nine combat convoy security missions covering 19,746 miles with zero accidents.
Among Sam’s other accomplishments was receiving an Associates of Applied Science degree; working as an intern with NASA during the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope; tutoring many students at Animas Elementary School as a teacher assistant and was a mentor to many offering personal/professional guidance. He worked at Raytheon as a Plant Associate for 12 years. His hobbies included golfing, watching football (Redskins & Vikings fan), Indy car and NASCAR racing, Western movies and listening to old school music.
He is preceded in death by his mother Irene J. Shorty and brother Ray S. Shorty.
He is survived by fiancée Debi Martinez; father Sonny Shorty, Sr.; brother Sonny Shorty, Jr.; sisters Geneva McConnell (Joseph), Priscilla Shorty, Brenda Castillo, and Josephine Shorty; nephews Aaron, Stephen (Kiana), Sonny III; nieces Ashley (Ryan), Victoria, Alexis (Nate), and Natrielle; great-grandchildren Mason Castillo, Oriah Fulton, Sophia Martinez, Matt Martinez, and Mia Martinez; and his fur baby chihuahua Ginger Roxy Shorty.
