Sam Male, 96, of Gypsy, passed away at his daughter’s residence on Saturday, January 8, 2011 following an extended illness. He was born in St. John, Italy on June 20, 1914 the son of the late Bernardo Male and Catherine Ambrosia Male. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Tressie (Loria) Male in 2006. Mr. Male is survived by one daughter; S. K. Phillips of Gypsy; one granddaughter; Teresa and husband Daniel Cunningham II who was like a son, of Gypsy; one grandson; Benjamin Male of Wilsonburg; one great granddaughter; Sierra Cunningham of Gypsy; one brother; Bernardo “Benny” Male and wife Charolette of Woodsfield, Oh; two sisters; Catherine Male of Lumberport and Burldine “Dena” Heaton and husband Roy of Mantua, OH; and special caregivers; Nancy McArthur and Peggy Cunningham and several nieces and nephews, including his devoted nephew Louie Male. Mr. Male was preceded in death by one son; Sam Male and five brothers; John, Louie, Joseph “Joe”, Pete, and Anthony “Tony” Male. He was a Navy Veteran having served during WWII where he was on the Landing Craft Infantry 404. He was a member many organizations including the Clarksburg VFW 573, American Legion Post 31 of Shinnston both of which he had a lifetime membership, Shinnston Historical Society, Moose Lodge 929, UMWA local 1501, CCC Camp of Quiet Dell, he attended the Shinnston Nutrition Center and was an Italian Heritage founder having served on WV Italian Heritage Festival Honorary Council. Mr. Male was owner and operator of Sam’s Barber Shop on Bridge St. in Shinnston for 27 years and previously worked for Consol Robinson Run Mine 95. He enjoyed Raising a garden and was affectionately known as “Papa” by many family and friends. Mr. Male was also Catholic by Faith and attended St. Ann’s Catholic Church.
