TANCREDI
After a long battle with serious medical issues, Salvatore “Sal” Tancredi passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his immediate family on May 8, 2022 at the age of 78. Sal lived in Springfield at the time of his death; he was formerly from Overbrook and Upper Darby, PA.
Despite the pain, Sal remained gracious and appreciative of all care he received. He showed unwavering courage in each challenge he faced. He adored spending time with his family, his friends and his “brothers.” His eyes lit up each time he knew was going to receive company.
Sal was born in South Philadelphia to his loving parent Louis and Mary (nee Troiano). They then moved to St. Donato’s Parish in Overbrook. Sal described himself as “not a bad kid, but a mischievous one.”
Sal met the love of his life, Brenda, in grade school. He went on to Dobbins Votech where he studied butchering so he could follow in his Father’s footsteps.
Sal loved music and learned to play the accordion and the drums and also had a wonderful singing voice. He played the drums in several neighborhood groups.
Sal and Brenda attended each other’s proms and married in 1966. They lived in Overbrook until they moved to Upper Darby in 1968 with one year old Annette.
Dina Marie was born in 1969. The Westview house was filled with happy memories of times spent with friends, family, and neighbors. The home was filled with all types of music especially doo-wop.
Sal supported everything his children did. Even though he did not attend college, Dina shared that he got her through with these simple words of encouragement “you got this!” He was an all-hands-on deck ballet dad, the biggest fan of all things and people Summer Stage, and even performed in a dance recital and a play. He assisted in the Today theater program for children with special needs. He was the video guy for all performances and special events.
Sal loved being with his friends, his “bros.” They had many an adventure whether it be in Wildwood as teens, or on hunting and fishing trips as adults, or just spending time together.
Sal belonged to the Men of Malvern where he prayed for fifty years. He looked forward to that weekend in January spending time in prayer and in adoration. He prayed for everyone always.
He loved his country and our flag. The flag had to be respected and treated the proper way. Sal’s one regret was that he was found physically undesirable for military induction. Again, he wanted to be just like his dad who served in the army during WWII.
Sal had a great love of children. Whether he knew them or not, Sal would talk like Donald Duck to any kid he saw to make them smile or laugh. He was Uncle Sal to so many and like a dad to so many others.
Sal was full of wisdom and love and shared both gifts freely. He was the guy everyone went to for advice.
Disney World was his favorite place. He made five trips there – each one precious and special. In 2018, he was able to share his happy place with his only grandchild, Olivia Grace. From her birth, Sal and Olivia were like two peas in a pod. He loved her so much that he even tried a raisin for her!
Sal loved helping his customers at A&P and Super Fresh. He took great pride in his craft and in sharing the best cooking method for each cut of meat you bought from him. Later in life he would say, “I was a good meat cutter” to which we would agree.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Brenda (nee Pisasale), his daughters Annette (Michael Heiner) Tancredi and Dina Marie (Nicholas Spadea) Tancredi, his granddaughter Olivia Grace, and his sister Arlene (Robert) Pomante and his nieces and nephews.
He loved so deeply and gave of himself so freely to all. He will be missed by each person who he made laugh, who he lent his ear to and by all who asked for his words of wisdom.
