Sally Jean Stout, 75, died November 28, 2021, surrounded by family in Des Moines, IA.

Sally was born on February 13, 1946, in Burlington, IA. She took an early liking to roller skating and much of her time was spent at Kenny’s Roller Rink with family and friends. Her first marriage to Richard Roll, while not meant to last, produced three fine children: Robyn, Ginger, and Jason. An amicable separation from Rick would later bloom into a cordial friendship, and while horseback riding was another cherished hobby in those days, it was her love of music that could easily be noted throughout her entire life.

The middle of Sally’s life was defined by family, friends, and the man she would describe as “a gift from God.” She married her second husband, Paul Stout, on May 15, 1982, and a few years later she birthed her final child, Michael. They lived in Iowa City, where Sally was an independent seamstress and with her husband, they did crafts and confections for numerous local craft shows. These “Sweet Traditions” would eventually culminate in a little cookie and candy shop in Sycamore Mall with that very name. Through it all, she watched her older children grow and marry, raised her youngest child, helped found and support a young Iowa City Church of Christ, and welcomed her first grandchildren.

Her later years were spent in Des Moines, IA where she worked as a cake designer for Hy-Vee until retiring in February of 2017 following the tragic loss of her eldest child a few months before. She spent her final years in retirement-focused on her favorite things: Christ, crafts, family, and friends. From lavish holiday celebrations to the beloved cookie parties, she never spared any expense to show her incredible gifts of generosity and hospitality. She loved her family, her friends, her “adopted” children, and all the acquaintances in between.

Sally is survived by her husband, Paul; her daughter, Ginger Andrews; her eldest son and his wife, Jason and Jennifer Roll; her youngest son, Michael Stout; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; countless friends and numerous wayward souls she collected along the way. She was preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Robyn Fiedler.
