Sally Ann (Johnson) Schomers, formerly of Des Moines reposed in the Lord on January 28, 2022.
Sally was born in Des Moines, Iowa on August 29, 1929 to Charles and Orpha Johnson. She graduated from Perry High School and attended MacMurray College and the University of Iowa. In Perry her friends were the ‘naughty nine’. She was a member of the DAR and also met and later married Gerald Schomers. At the U of I she was a member of Pi Beta Phi and enjoyed archery.
The couple had three children and lived in Ottumwa, Iowa. There Sally was active in PEO and a member of First Presbyterian Church. After moving to Des Moines she served as an Elder and Bible teacher at Westminster United Presbyterian Church. After her divorce from Jerry she worked at National Handcraft and was a proof reader at Meredith Corporation. She had a keen eye for detail and an incredible memory for song lyrics. She loved to play the piano and tap dance. Her joy was to have the family around the piano singing at holidays. She enjoyed family time at Lake Panorama, especially slow boat rides at sunset. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and spoiling them.
Sally developed a faith in Christ in the mid 1970’s and prayed faithfully for her family through the decades. She was often found reading her Bible. Her Assisted Living caregivers describe her as witty and sassy, even as chronic pain and disability from Parkinsons worsened. As long as her lipstick was on and her hair was done, life was OK. She would spontaneously start singing a song related to whatever was going on and could always sing along with a hymn, even when speech became more difficult.
Those left to honor her memory and her faith are her brother, Raymond Johnson (Jeanann) of Clive; son, Michael Schomers (Gail) of Tampa, Florida; daughter, Susan Swanson (Jim) of Kansas City, Missouri; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her ex-husband Gerald (d. 2003), her son, Tom (d.2014) and her sister, Nancy Mooney (d. 2017). Sally was beloved by many who are grateful to have enjoyed her spirit of love, humor and faith.
