Sally Ann Matthews, age 66 of Hope, Michigan, passed away on Thursday morning November 10, 2016 at her home. The daughter of the late Alfred and Henrietta (Meekhof) Meyer was born in Cadillac, Michigan on May 12, 1950 and was raised on the family farm in Tustin, Michigan. She married Darwin Dean Matthews on September 30, 1972 and the couple moved to Hope in 1979.

An anchor for her family and community, Sally will be missed by many, including her husband of 44 years Darwin Dean Matthews; children, Howard (Amanda) Matthews of Georgia, Sarah (Greg) Brandon of Tennessee, Emily (Rob) Rushton of Connecticut with grandchildren, Davis, Charlotte, Sylvia, and Mary Rose; sisters, Jean (George) Watters, Donna (Carman) Minarik, Connie (Mitchell) Place, Lorna (Doug) VanBuren; brothers, Mark (Nancy) Meyer, Wayne Meyer; many nieces and nephews and Pepper Jack, her beloved dog. In addition to her parents, Sally was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard (Alice) and Jack Meyer.

Sally provided in-home childcare for several years while her children were young and worked outside the home in childcare and retail sales. She also devoted countless hours in service to the Hope United Methodist Church where she was a long time member.

An accomplished knitter and crocheted, Sally relished teaching others her craft. She took joy in camping and visiting lighthouses with her family, hunting Petoskey stones on Lake Michigan, time spent with her knitting group, and cheering for her Detroit Tigers. Sally was especially proud of her large extended family and worked tirelessly to plan holiday gatherings including an annual Fourth of July family reunion. These events often brought together over 30 people and Sally made sure every last person was comfortable and well-fed.
