Said Wahid Zewari, 73, of Columbia, MD died Sunday, July 2, 2017 surrounded by family and friends. He lost his battle with cancer after having been in remission for two years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Said Wazir Zewari and Mahbooba (Ashrafee) Zewari.
While attending Purdue University, he met his wife of 44 years, Jan (Woody) Zewari, who survives him. They were married in Kabul, Afghanistan on May 19, 1973. He is also survived by his two daughters: Michelle (Timothy) Wood of Columbia, MD and Sheila (Richard) Lynard of Forest Hill, MD and five grandchildren: Alex and Katie Wood and Andrew, Matthew, and Steven Lynard. He was looking forward to the birth of his fifth grandson, Baby Lynard, who is due to be born on July 3, 2017. Additionally, he is survived by his three sisters: Zia, Zoka, and Baiza, his brother Qadir, four half-brothers, his brother and sister-in-law, Jon and Denise Woody, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Dr. Zewari achieved his Masters and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. He went on to teach at Virginia Tech and later worked for Martin Marietta and ultimately retired, after 24 years of service, as a civilian employee of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
