On Friday January 22, 2010, Ruth Ethel Williams went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It was a time for rejoice, as she had suffered so much and is now at peace.
Ruth was born to Hallie Turnery and Raymond Everett in Lordsburg (she was the first baby born in the old hospital, where McDonalds is now) on March 17, 1921. She joined a big brother, Bennie Everett. They were very good friends and very protective of each other. Raymond was on the railroad and as the new guy, he was bumped a lot to go on the other towns. There were also ranches to go to, but Ruth was not an animal person. She laughed at how when they swam in the water tank and a fish touched her she would have to get out of the water. Ruth grew up mostly in Lordsburg and some of her good friends were Louise and Ruth Fisher, among others.
On November 2, 1935, Ruth Everett married Delphin “Blackie” Williams. When Blackie died in 2002 they had been married for 66 years. They were the proud parents of four children—three boys and one daughter. Ruth worked six days a week and on Sunday after church and Sunday school and after dinner she did the weekly laundry for six people on an old wringer tub. She did get her ironing done. That was a blessing.
Ruth and Blackie instilled in their children to be honest and to try the best that they could. They were also raised to be Christians.
In 1969 they were involved in an auto accident from which Ruth lost her left leg and had a lot of other major health problems. She hardly ever showed any of her pain or discomfort until the very end and said, “If God wants my leg he can have it.” She walked on crutches for over 28 years and the family would see young children get on the floor and look up her dress and say, “Lady your leg is gone”, and she would look surprised and say, “My goodness have you seen it anywhere?” By that time their Mom would have come and gotten the child. Ruth would say, “It’s ok. They are just curious. A few grandkids of hers also got a good rap with a crutch or two from time to time.
Ruth is survived by her son, James (Judy) of California; daughter-in-law Roberta of Oregon; and daughter Karen (Willie) McDonald of Lordsburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents Hallie Kennedy and Ray Everett; her husband of 66 years, Blackie Williams; two sons, Robert Norris and Bennie Dell Williams; one daughter-in-law, Rita Lindsay; one son-in-law, Richard Bejarano; brother Brother Bennie; and granddaughter Julie Marie Bejarano.
Ruth Ethel Williams was a wonderful person. She was kind, always ready to help you in anything you needed and she was an animal lover.
According to her daughter, Karen, “It was a privilege to have her as my Mother. She was my best friend, my confidant, my nurse, my advisor, my teacher, and as she was to ALL of her family.”
Go with God, my dear Ruth, and enjoy not hurting. Rejoice being with the others who have gone before. She said when she got to heaven and had two legs she was going to run for three months. “Run, Mom, Run! We rejoice with you as you run.”
