Ruth Sheldon Putnam Caldwell, age 99 of Midland died peacefully on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at the King’s Daughters Home.

She was born in Midland, Michigan on May 29, 1916, the daughter of the late Dr. Mark Edison Putnam and Charlotte Sheldon Putnam. Ruth attended school in Midland and graduated from Albion College. On September 9, 1939 she was married to Richard William Caldwell of Midland. Ruth was a school teacher for a short period of time and later became a mother and active member in many community organizations.

She was a life board member for the Midland Open Door, a Girl Scout Leader, a Boy Scout Leader, served on various committees of the Midland Area Community Foundation, a Sunday school teacher, a Deacon for the Memorial Presbyterian Church, King’s Daughters and was a member of the Contemporary Review Club, Midland Country Club, and P.E.O. Ruth and her husband, Bill, lived in Milan Italy for seven years where he was the Managing Director for Dow Gruppo Lepetit.

Ruth loved her family, friends, and had a true concern and compassion for other people. She was a person who would faithfully support the causes that she believed in. Ruth enjoyed flowers, reading, a cottage in Ludington and being with people. She was a kind and gentle person who was loved by everyone who knew her.

Ruth is survived by her three children, W. David (Sue) Caldwell of Lakewood, CO, Richard L. (Anne) Caldwell of Ludington, Patricia A. Sutton of Centennial, CO; five grandchildren, Corey Sutton, Marnie (David) Momsen, Justin (Brooke) Sutton IV, Tiffany (Matthew) Schultz, Richard (Sharon) Caldwell, Jr.; six great grandchildren; and dear sister in law, Mildred Putnam of Midland.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband R. William Caldwell on September 28, 2004, and her brother Mark Sheldon Putnam.
