Ruth Nichols, 98, of Shadow Lake Village passed away at home on November 4, 2016. She was born in the Bronx to the late Joseph and Alice McKenna. She graduated from Kearny High School in 1936, where she edited the yearbook. She was fluent in Spanish.
For several years Ruth was a real estate agent at Sterling Thompson.
She was a masterful cook and, when living in Vermont, maintained an extensive garden.
An accomplished seamstress and a knitter until her death, Ruth knit items for the premature infant unit at Riverview Medical Center. An avid lifetime reader, she was a literacy volunteer. She was proud of her work volunteering for many organizations and groups over several years.
Ruth is predeceased by her beloved son Donald in 1966, her husband Anthony in 2000, and her siblings Robert, Walter, Richard and Alice . She is survived by her loving children and their spouses: David and Susan of West Rupert, Vt., Richard and Mary Jo of Merchantville, NJ, and Nancy and Thomas McCarthy of Red Bank, NJ. Also surviving are her dear grandchildren: Karen, Justin, William and Andrew Nichols, and Michael, David and Laura McCarthy. She cherished her great grandchildren Sophia, Nicholas, Fiona and Guthrie. Her surviving sister is Helen McKenna of San Diego.
