Ruth Elizabeth Marshall, 98, of Grafton, passed away peacefully at Mon General Hospital after a short illness. She was born, November 29, 1917, in Grafton, WV, the daughter of the late George E. and Grace (Mahaffey) Gerkin. Mrs. Marshall was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-nine years, Charles E. Marshall, Jr., and one son, Ronald Edward Marshall, an infant grand-daughter, Elizabeth Marie Marshall and her sister, JoAnn Harrison. She is survived by a son, Charles Joseph Marshall; a daughter, Jane Marshall Cost and spouse Jason all of Grafton; her brother, Thomas David Gerkin and spouse Mary Louise, Vienna; and daughter-in-law, Melody Sue (McVicker) Marshall, Charleston. Also surviving are grandchildren, James S. Marshall of Dunbar; Sherri Marie (Marshall) Dougherty and spouse, Bill, of Dunbar; Sarah Katherine (Marshall) Price and spouse, Brian, of Huntington; Christopher Edward Marshall of Charleston; Joel Matthew Cost and spouse Jessica (Pollock) of Milton; Jared Marshall Cost and spouse Karissa (Vallorani) of Morgantown. Mrs. Marshall is also survived by ten great-grandchildren: Rebecca Marshall, Luke Dougherty, Emily Dougherty, Jackson Price, Ashlyn Price, Ainsley Price, Bella Cost, Lucia Cost, Judah Cost, and Jayce Cost. Mrs. Marshall was a graduate of Grafton High School with the Class of 1935, and a graduate of Fairmont State College and West Virginia University. Mrs. Marshall retired from the Taylor County Board of Education in 1976, after 35 years teaching elementary education at First Ward School, West Side School and Anna Jarvis Elementary. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa teacher’s honorary sorority, Taylor County Retired Teachers, and the Taylor County Order of the Eastern Star #12. Mrs. Marshall was Methodist by faith.
