Matthews: Ruth E. Careins, 89, went home to be with the Lord on Friday evening, July 15, 2011, at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie. She was born in Muncie, the daughter of the late Everett and Lacy (Priddy) Barnett. She graduated from Jefferson Township High School in 1940. Ruth married Chalmer Careins on June 28, 1940.

He preceded her in death on February 2, 1996. Mrs. Careins had lived in Matthews for most of her life and formerly worked at Essex Wire in Matthews for 10 years. She was an active member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Matthews, Matthews Euchre Club, Covered Bridge Society and Warner Gear Sympathy Club. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, and doing many activities with her church.

Survivors include two daughters, Rita (Jim) Hoyt, Gainesville, FL, and Jill (Dee) Ballinger, Upland; a son-in-law, Wayne Pence, Selma; a brother Larry (Joanne) Barnett, Matthews; a sister Wanda Armstrong, Matthews; a brother-in-law, Bernie Jackson; two sisters-in-law, Norette and Betty Barnett; eight grandchildren, Tamera (Mark) Sansone, Kelli (Jimmy) Gill, Brad (Andrea) Hoyt, Jay Hoyt, Johana (Wesley) Nottingham, Daniel (Caitlyn) Hoyt, Evan Ballinger, and Jara (David) Coonce; and eleven great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Pence, an infant son, Edward Careins, four brothers, Roy, James, Bob, and Glen Barnett, sisters, Mary Nelson, Francis Jackson, and Lucille Cole and brothers-in-law, Harlan Nelson, Erman Cole, and Bill Armstrong.
