Ruth Arlene Thompson was born on August 26, 1924 in Hereford, Arizona to the late Roy Allen Newman and Edna Beatrice Morrow Newman. She attended Tombstone Union High School in Arizona, graduating class of 1942. After high school, she continued her education, attending telegraphy school in California. Ruth went to work on an Army base for Western Union for several years, until they closed in 1946. She moved to Baltimore and began working as a bookkeeper for a furniture store. Ruth then came home to care for her family.
