On the evening of March 21st, 2022, Russell Dean Lundy, 82, of Urbandale, Iowa, born to Harry and Eleanor (Drennan) Lundy, passed away at UnityPoint Health Iowa Methodist Medical Center surrounded by loved ones. A kind and gentle soul, “Russ”, was born November 6, 1939, in New Sharon, Iowa. He was dedicated to his wife of 61 years and together they provided a strong foundation for a growing family.
Russ attended a country school down the road from the family farm. He graduated from New Sharon High School and Central College in Pella, Iowa. While at Central, Russ participated in baseball, football, and basketball. Later in life, golf became the sport he studied and loved most. During his time in college, he met his wife, Betty Lou Nichols, in Knoxville, Iowa, and they were married on September 13, 1961. Following his graduation, he went on to start his own insurance agency in which he promoted employee benefits and services.
Russ devoted his time to his family. Whether he was attending ball games, choir concerts, plays, or going on golf outings, he was always remarkably supportive of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Russ was a man of faith. He was actively involved in the ministry of Covenant Christian Church in Urbandale, Iowa, for 52 years.
Being the caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather that he was, he will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Betty Lou Lundy; son, Clark (Julie) Lundy, of Grimes, Iowa; daughter, LuAnn (Kevin) Smith, of Polk City, Iowa; five grandchildren, Blake (Meghann) Smith, Trent (Shantell) Smith, Reed Smith, Kirsten Lundy, and Brooke Lundy; as well as four great-grandchildren, Lena Smith, Everett Smith, Ella Smith, and Rue Smith.
Russ has been welcomed into the kingdom of Heaven by his granddaughter, Nicole Lundy; his father, Harry Lundy; his mother Eleanor Drennan Lundy; and two brothers, Lt. Harry Lundy Jr. and Lewis (Delores) Lundy.
“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fear for today nor our worries about tomorrow…”
