Russell K. Mills, 89 of Freeport died Friday, January 30, 2004, at his home. He was born September 7, 1914, in New Hampton, IA to Everett and Gertrude (Matzke) Mills. He attended schools in Iowa. He served in WWII from 1941 to 1945 and received the Bronze Star.
In August of 1941, he married Miriam Kester in Freeport. He worked as a farmer in the Orangeville area and for Prairie State Select Sires. His memberships included Park Hills Evangelical Church, Adult Sunday school class, Stephenson County Mounted Patrol, a lifetime member of the American Legion of the Ewert Kline Post 720 of Orangeville, and charter member of the Illinois Sheriffs Association. Russell had a great love for horses, raising them most of his life. He enjoyed giving children rides.
He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters Debra (James) Metz of Gratiot, WI; Donna (Allen) Webb of Albia, IA; 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 1 sister, Vivian (Delmer) Hurless both of Freeport, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one grandson.
