Lieutenant Rudolph “Rudy” Daniel Russo, 54, of Claremont, Virginia passed into the loving arms of God on June 12, 2024 surrounded by his family and friends at his home. Born in Johnstown, New York on March 3, 1970, he was the son of Sandra Tobin Russo “Nonie” and the late Rudolph Anthony Russo. Rudy served with the United States Coast Guard from 1992 to 2006. During this time, he was a rescue swimmer with over 2,000 lives saved, counter narcotics officer, fisheries control officer, navigator and Spanish interpreter, piloted vessels over a vast range of oceans from Greenland to Brazil, senior marine surveyor, investigator, EMT and Paramedic and training officer. In 2001, he was a first responder during the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the twin towers in New York City. Rudy received many awards and commendations for his outstanding performance in the waterborne evacuation of nearly 1 million civilians from Manhattan Island, New York. In 2003, he was a founding member of the Department of Homeland Security and in 2004 he became a licensed Master Merchant Marine Officer. After his retirement from the United States Coast Guard, he was an agricultural specialist and caretaker at Chippokes Plantation in Surry, Virginia from 2007 to 2011. Rudy earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography in 1992 and a Master of Science degree in 2004 from Boise State University. From 1998 to 1999 he was an Adjunct Professor at Northwest Technical Community College. Rudy facilitated a bible study at his home and all members surrounded him with love into eternity. He proudly mentored to Timothy R. Guffy, J.B. Ross and Gabe Ross. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife Therese Russo; stepsons, Justin Woodington of Suffolk, Virginia, Joshua Woodington and his wife Stephanie of Suffolk and Jeremy Woodington of Suffolk; granddaughter, Layla Woodington; brothers, Steve Russo and his wife Tracy of Johnstown, New York and Peter Russo and his wife Karen of Arizona; sister, Sherry Russo Miller and her husband Pete of Navarro, Florida; nephews, Ben Russo (Kathryn) and their son Luca, Stephen Russo (Natalie) and their daughter Noah, Sebastian Russo and Jacob Miller (Ashley) and their daughters Lily and Lucy; niece, Abbey Proa (Zach) and their son Zach; sisters-in-law, Debbie, Linda and Brenda; brother-in-law, Mike Worrell; his beloved pets, Claire, Angel and Harly.
