Ruby Ruth McCammon Atkins 90, passed away on January 15, 2021 in Mishawaka, IN. Ruth was born in Carlisle, Indiana on March 11, 1930 to Raymond and Maude (Walters) McCammon. Ruth was preceded in death by her five siblings Nelson, Pauline, Jane, Rosemary and Esther. She graduated from Carlisle High School and Indiana University, Bloomington School of Music. Ruth taught piano and played piano accompaniment for many music students over the years.
On August 11, 1951 she married Charles Atkins in South Bend, IN. They met on the steps of the music school at IU in Bloomington, IN. Charles passed away on January 17, 2010. Ruth is survived by her six children, Eric (Donna Walsh-Reed) Atkins, from South Bend, IN, Rachelle (Jimmy) Rogers from Delta Junction, AK, Lisa (Bill) McCarthy from South Bend, IN, Jeffery (Aggie) Atkins from Chicago, IL, Teresa Atkins from South Bend, IN and David (Meredith) Atkins from Denver, CO. Ruth is also survived by her eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Ruth was a wonderful cook with a bountiful table where she welcomed everyone. She loved playing the piano, listening to music, especially Jazz, playing Euchre, reading, walking on the beach and chocolate. Ruth and Charles retired to Garden City Beach, SC for a time before returning to South Bend a few years after Charles passing. Ruth and Charles started going to Rocco’s Pizza Restaurant in 1951 after they opened and made it one of our family’s late night favorites for almost 70 years.
