Ruby Lee Moore was born on March 6, 1941 in Port Gibson, Mississippi, to Lillie Phillips and Archie Moore. She attended school there and in the late 1950’s moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. She resumed her education attending Johnson Locket Elementary, Andrew Bell and finally Booker T Washington. Where she graduated and received her diploma in1961.
After graduating she worked at Charity Hospital in the department of Surgery. In 1962 she met Vernon John Coston and the two later married in 1963. From that union, they had five children. Niles Vernon, Yaulande Teresa, Ynez Joan, Yannette Monique and Naraka John Coston.
In 1968, the family moved to San Diego, CA where Ruby was a housewife until she enrolled in a Nursing program at Southwestern College. She later went on to work as a Nurse’s Aide at Paradise Valley Convalescent Hospital in 1972. After graduation she worked part-time at the County Medical Hospital in the Department of Orthopedics. When that job ended, she acquired a position in Patient Information Systems.
In 1981, her health started failing and she underwent heart by-pass surgery in1981.
After doing some traveling, fishing, cooking and sewing, Ruby returned to the workforce in 1995 at the Logan Heights Family Health Clinic.
On June 1, 1999, Ruby underwent a second open heart surgery, which resulted in her retiring again, from the Logan Heights Family Clinic.
After a lifelong fight with heart disease resulting in multiple hospitalizations throughout her years, Ruby fought until she could not fight anymore and made her transition on Monday, July 12, 2021.
Ruby is survived by four of her five children; Yaulande, Ynez, Yannette and Naraka, two Son-in-laws, Calvin Hicks and Arthur Cook, daughter-in-law Gena Coston, grandchildren, Tyresha, Calvin Jr., Demetrius, Jeremy, Philip, Shondra, Chauntiele, Alexandra, Nolan, Grant and Nia; great-grandchildren, Zion, Anise, Brian Jr and Nylah. A host of family and friends in New Orleans, Louisiana, Jackson, Mississippi and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Ruby will be truly missed but not forgotten.
