Ruby Lee (Harrod) Evans passed away peacefully at her home in Fort Lupton, Colorado on May 7, 2014 of causes incident to age.
Ruby Harrod was born October 24, 1916 in Madrid, Alabama to parents, John Daniel (JD) Harrod (1892-1963) and Vera (Thomas) Harrod (1901-1953). She was later joined by four younger sisters, all whom preceded her in death. The Harrod family farm, which was jointly owned and worked by Ruby’s parents, uncle and grandparents, was sold in 1920 and replaced by a larger farm midway between Alford and Cottondale, Florida, where Ruby lived until her marriage at age 18. Also in 1920, her grandmother introduced her to a lifelong habit of dipping snuff. She attended schools in Alford, where she became known as a top alligator wrestler, in Cottondale, where she played varsity basketball and in Ocala, where two of her uncles ran speak-easy, honky-tonk brothels during the Prohibition Era. Also in that era, her father and another of her uncles expanded their farming operations with a bootlegging business, in which Ruby bottled the product, until legal problems cost them the family farm.
