Johnny Royce Boren passed away on September 13th 2016 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on December 2, 1932 in Ralls, Texas to Johnny Raymond and Othel Hudgins Boren. His family lived in numerous areas of Texas due to his father’s employment with the railroad, finally settling in Sparta. Royce was a member of the Church of Christ.
Royce graduated from Belton High School in 1950 where he excelled in football. Running behind his brother Wesley at center, he was known as The Sparta Flash. He also lettered in basketball and baseball and played semi-pro baseball during the summers. He attended Southwestern University and obtained his undergraduate degree. He then attended Baylor University obtaining a Masters degree in Education.
He married on his birthday, December 2, 1955 to Sydney Vicknair of Salado. He was teaching and coaching in Elgin, Texas when he was drafted into the Army in January of 1956. After basic training in California, he was trained as a medic at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. He was stationed at Camp Bussac near Bordeaux, France.
After returning home from France, he continued his career in education. He retired with 42 years in public school service and 39 years was in Belton as a coach, principal and deputy superintendent. He served on the Belton ISD school board for 10 years after retiring.
He and Sydney celebrated their 60 year anniversary in December of 2015. He loved spending time with family and close friends. He also loved any time spent on the golf course or working in his yard.
He is survived by his wife, a brother Charles Boren and wife Rita of Canyon Lake and a sister Sondra Boren Williams and husband, Richard of Grosbeck. His three children, Lewis Boren and wife Robin of Belton. Jeffrey Boren and wife Kim of Belton and his daughter Karen Boren of Belton. His grandchildren Sara Boren Halpayne and husband Chris of Belton. Zachary Boren and wife Erin of Temple, Katelin Boren of Belton and Austin Boren of Belton and Great grandchildren, Cort Bethel, Ziva Halpayne, Daxx Halpayne, and Carter Boren. He is also leaving behind numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Othel Hudgins Boren, his father, Johnny Raymond Boren, his second mom, Lorene Parker Boren and his brother, Wesley Boren.
