Royal Edward VanMeter, age 83, passed away August 22, 2015, at the Rensselaer Care Center.
Roy was born in McCoysburg, Indiana on November 25, 1931, the son of Nellie Lucille (Bussell) and Clarence U. VanMeter. Roy was a lifetime resident of Jasper County and attended the Hanging Grove School. On December 2, 1951, Roy married Carol M. Dewey in Barkley Township, Jasper County, Indiana.
Carol preceded him in death in January 26, 1992. Roy enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 26, 1952, serving with the 610th Engr. Co. On October 27, 1954, he was released from active duty with the rank of Sargent. Roy retired in 1993 from Rensselaer Auto-Parts where he had been a machinist for thirty-seven years. He had previously been a mechanic at the former Hermanson-Nash Sales in Rensselaer. Roy was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Rensselaer. Other memberships include V.F.W. Post #1279 and American Legion Post #29, both of Rensselaer.
Roy is survived by his loving family, son Larry (wife Migdalia) VanMeter of El Paso, Texas, daughter Carolyn (husband Tom) Smith of Monticello, Ind., son Curtis VanMeter of Pilot Point, Texas and son Scott (wife Debra) VanMeter of Rensselaer, ten grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and his second wife, Patricia L. (Benner) Nagel VanMeter. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Carol and a grandson, Keith VanMeter.
