Roy Samuel “Sam” Jones, 100, passed peacefully on January 8, 2021, at Riverview Hospital.
He was born on September 15, 1920, in New Castle, and resided most of his life in Kokomo and Anderson. As a proud Marine, Sam served his country during World War II. Battling his way through the south pacific, including witnessing the flag-raising on Iwo Jima. He was a retiree of Indiana Bell Telephone Company after 35 years of service. He was a member of New Horizons Methodist Church; American Legion #127; 3rd Marine Division Association; Telephone Pioneers of America; and The Methodist Men’s Club. He was an avid Indiana High School Basketball fan and was a season ticket holder for many schools. He also enjoyed freshwater fishing, playing euchre, and playing his harmonica. Sam’s sense of humor was never lost. One of his favorite sayings was “I’m just standing on the corner watching all the pretty girls go by”.
Sam is survived by his daughter, Susan (James Larry Arms) Jones; son, Jeffrey (fiancee’ Susan Adkins and son, Jacob) Jones; grandsons, Ryan (Erin) Jones, Matthew (Katie) Jones; great-grandchildren, Harley Bertram, Grahm Bertram, Tessa Jones, Samuel “Sam” Jones; step-grandchildren, Brian Arms, Devin (Marisa) Arms, Michelle (Adrian) Snyder, step-great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Ava Arms, Evelyn and Alice Arms, Emma and Mason Snyder; brother, Paul Jones; sister-in-law, Betty Jones; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Mary Jones; mother, Mary Jones-Belt; father, Burl Q. Jones; siblings, John Jones, Morris Jones, Leona Stage, Helen Aaron, Hazel Finster, George Jones, Frank Jones; and his half brother, Merle Belt.
