Roy LaVerne Wetzel, January 9, 1920 – February 25, 2012.
Roy LaVerne Wetzel, age 92, of Belton, Texas. Roy was born January 9, 1920 in Grove Township, Taylor County, Iowa to Verne C. Wetzel and Hazel (West) Wetzel. Roy was raised as a farmer in Iowa until the time he was drafted into the Army during World War II. He served in Germany with the 104th Infantry, Timberwolves Division until he was severely wounded at the Rhine River in Germany.
He was sent to McCloskey Hospital in Temple, Texas for rehabilitation. He worked at Swan Beach Studebaker Auto in Temple, Texas until he went into Civil Service at Camp Hood, Killeen, Texas. He retired from Civil Service in 1979. Roy received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and several campaign ribbons.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother; one brother, Cleo Wetzel of Clearfield, Iowa; and one daughter, Gloria Jean Wetzel. He is survived by his loving wife, Pearl Wetzel of Belton, Texas; daughters, Mertie Williams of Belton, Texas, Diane Stanford and husband Bill of Belton, Texas, Brenda Basore and husband David of Pflugerville, Texas, Phyllis Woljevach and husband Ron of Temple, Texas; son, Lumen Wetzel and wife Freida of Troy, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.
