Shortly after midnight on Monday November 16th Roy Johnson, Sr., 81, transitioned into eternal peace.

Roy grew up in Aiken in a strong family environment. When not attending school, he played outside with cousins, fishing, hunting and playing sports.

On February 24, 1962 Roy married the love of his life Mildred Ann Moton. From this union two children were born, Gay and Roy Jr.  As the couple began to build their life together Roy began to work as a taxi driver and also worked for Hostess Bakery.  He loved sports so much he began to play basketball with his brothers -in -law in various men’s leagues. He also coached his family’s softball and basketball teams. Other than his family his true passion was the Washington Redskin which he watched, yelled at and defended every Sunday faithfully. He spent his free time watching various sports and always supported local teams, The Washington Wizards and Baltimore Orioles.

In the early 80’s Roy joined New Samaritan Baptist Church of Washington DC, he served faithfully on the Usher Board and Transportation Ministry. He began working for the US Department of Agriculture in the Passport Division until he retired in 2004. Upon retirement, he enjoyed attending games with his son and nephew. He also enjoyed playing card games (Go Fish and Spades) with his grandchildren. He enjoyed nightly Scrabble games with his wife, who he lovingly called Shorty. He enjoyed traveling to various cities to attend the Johnson Family Reunions, which he was the President of the Washington DC chapter for many years. As time moved along one of Roy’s truest joys was attending his granddaughters school and sports events and the special occasions such as High School and College Graduations. He later became great grandparent to three grandsons and was elated to attend yearly grandparent’s day and their sporting events. Roy was the Johnson family cook for many family celebrations, Holidays and Sunday dinners and he enjoyed doing fish fries and many southern dishes and recipes he learned from his mom. He enjoyed cooking for all of his wife’s friends and family events as well.

Roy is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mildred Ann Johnson; one daughter, Gay Stephanie Hinds (Michael); one son Roy Johnson, Jr.  (Phaedra); three granddaughters Jasmine Marie Johnson (Daniel), Daijah Nicole Johnson and Shannon Janel Hinds; three great grandsons, Jayden, Landon and Cooper Johnson; three sisters, Rebecca Williams (James), Rosa Frazier, and Hayzetta Young; one brother, Kenneth Johnson and preceded in death by Wilson Johnson (Dorothy); one uncle, John Ball; two aunts, Bernice Bell and Katherine Johnson; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  He was a beloved surrogate father/grandfather for many sons and daughters.
