Mr. Roy Alvin Dickerson,74, of Durham, NC passed away Sunday, October 3rd, 2021.

Roy was born on December 12, 1946 in Oxford, NC to the late Woodrow (Sr.) and Rosa Dickerson. Roy was a humble man of God who faithfully served his family and country. He served in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968, as well as Desert Storm in 1991. He retired after 28 years of service with the North Carolina Army National Guard and 37 years of service with the United States Postal Service. Mr. Dickerson was a member of Oak Grove Masonic Lodge, American Legion Post 7 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7383.

Roy never met a stranger and enjoyed eating at The Grove Café (where many a friend was made and tales were told) and The Peddler Steak House. Among his favorite things were a good chew of Levi Garrett, country and gospel music and old western movies and TV shows.  He was especially fond of “Gunsmoke” and his favorite character, Chester. He had a passion for hunting and enjoyed several trips out west to Wyoming. Roy loved his International Farmall 140 tractor and planting a garden every season.

Roy was a loyal friend who enjoyed being on both ends of a good prank, good laughs and was often teased about needing “new lines”. We will never look at biscuits the same. Roy had many titles; First Sergeant, son, husband, dad, brother, uncle, and friend, but being “Paw Paw” was his favorite. He was very excited to learn that he would earn the title of “Great Paw Paw,” with the birth of baby Dickerson coming in May 2022 to Dylan and Sam.

He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings; Elizabeth Dickerson, Judy Lane, Alvin Lee Dickerson, James Dickerson, Ida Norford, Edna Murray, and William Dickerson.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mrs. Susie Woods Dickerson; Sons, Scott Dickerson (Vickie) of Pittsboro, NC and Chris Stephen Dickerson, Sr. (Kyla) of Stem, NC; Grandchildren, Dylan Dickerson (Samantha), Hannah Dickerson, Chris Stephen Dickerson, Jr., Gracie Dickerson, Tucker Burns, Madi Fisher, and Will Fisher; his brother, Woodrow Dickerson, Jr. (Nancy) of Oxford, NC; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is survived by many of his beloved military brothers who are too many to name. He is also survived by his grand dog, Rosco.

Roy leaves behind an incredible legacy and will be missed by many. To know him was to love him and while there will certainly be a void in our hearts, we find comfort in knowing we will be reunited with him one day in Heaven.
