Dr. Roy Allen McLaughlin, M.D., 77, of Caldwell, Idaho died on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. Roy was born in Mineola, New York on July 21, 1939, to Harold V. and Adele G. (Herman) McLaughlin.
Roy spent his early years with his mother and sisters on Long Island New York while his father served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during WWII. In 1944, Roy and his family moved to Seattle, Washington, where he attended grade school. Following his father’s purchase of the Ione State Bank, Roy and his family moved to the small mining and lumber town of Ione, Washington, where he graduated from Ione High School in 1957.
Roy attended Gonzaga University graduating with a degree in Pre-Medicine, and was accepted for early admission to medical school. He was decreed a Doctorate of Medicine (M.D.) from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska in 1964. During his attendance at Creighton, Roy met Charlotte A.
Roy’s family was very important to him and he instilled a strong work ethic that led to all five children achieving undergraduate, graduate or doctorate degrees, ten total. He also loved introducing them to opportunities unique to living on acreage outside Caldwell and in McCall. An avid outdoorsman, Roy enjoyed golf, alpine skiing, whitewater rafting, hunting, fishing and flying.
Roy is survived by his wife, Charlotte of Caldwell; son Captain Mark McLaughlin, U.S. Navy (ret) and his wife Kristin of Flatonia, Texas; daughter Teresa McLaughlin Cobb and her husband Dave of Boise, Idaho; son Michael McLaughlin and his wife Leticia of Eagle, Idaho; daughter Christina Henyon and her husband Michael of Mt. Airy, Maryland; and Dr. Matthew McLaughlin, D.O., and his wife Kami of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; 15 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter. Roy is also survived by his three sisters; Carol (Larry) Hoyt of Spokane, Washington; Lois (Lee) Renner of Flagstaff, Arizona; and Marybeth (Jerry) Smith of Seattle, Washington. He is preceded in death by his mother and father.
