Mrs. Rose Ella King Woodruff was born in Louisville, Kentucky on
October 6, 1921. With her parents, William Lee Grant King Sr. and
Mae Belle King and two brothers, William Lee Grant King Jr. and
Dr. Joseph Prather King (all predeceased), she moved to Indianapolis, IN.
Rose Ella King Woodruff taught home economics at George Washington
High Schooland became Supervisor of the Home Economics Department.
She then became Dean of Girls at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, IN.
Rose was appointed as a Fulbright Exchange teacher in Plymouth, England.
She married John Woodruff Sr. (predeceased) an Olympic Gold Medalist
in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Rose and John moved to Highstown, New Jersey
where she worked as a State Supervisor of Home & Consumer Family Education
for the New Jersey Department of Education. While in New Jersey, she also
worked as a teacher, counselor and program coordinator for the
South Brunswick School District until she retired in 1983. While retired,
Mrs. Woodruff and her husband moved to Sacramento, California for many
years; then back to New Jersey and finally settled in Fountain Hills, Arizona.
Rose spent many years touring the U.S. and the world. She was a leader
and she inspired many people. As a long term member of many professional
and social organizations, she supported the educational, professional and
humane needs of others.
Rose leaves in loving memory, her stepdaughter, Randilyn Gilliam,
stepson John Woodruff a host of grand and great-grandchildren.
