Dr. Ronald W. Waynant, of Clarksville, MD, passed away on May 8th, 2016, after a long fight with Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and diabetes. Ron was born in Gettysburg, PA, on October 4th, 1940, and grew up with his younger sister, Deborra, in Sabillasville, MD, the son of Vaughn and Naomi Waynant. Ron was valedictorian of Thurmont High School class of 1958 and attended Johns Hopkins University, earning a Bachelor’s in Engineering Science in 1962. While working for Westinghouse and the Naval Research Laboratory, Ron completed a M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering as part of the initial teams of scientists inventing new lasers and laser applications. After numerous scientific publications, books, and patents, Ron changed his focus into lasers in medicine and rose to the position of Senior Optical Engineer in the Food and Drug Administration’s Electro-Optics branch. Ron was awarded the distinguished title of Fellow in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Optical Society of America, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. Ron is survived by his wife of 39 years, Priscilla Pilson Waynant, his daughter, Marcia W. Patchan (Robert), his sons, William and Kristopher (Tara). Ron had three wonderful granddaughters, Kathryn, Julianne, and Mackenzie, and he adored them deeply. He is also survived by his sister Deborra Lego (B. Timothy).
