Ronald “Ron” T. Westerlund, age 80 of DeMotte, IN passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Hospice Franciscan Communities in Crown Point, IN.
Ron was born November 24, 1934 in Chicago, IL, the son of Walter and Catherine (Wegrzyn) Westerlund. Ron was a graduate of Bowen High School, class of 1953 and served his country proudly in the US Navy.
On April 4, 1970, in Chicago, he married the love of his life, Pamela “Pam” (Pell) and with that union, they had two children. Ron worked as a steel worker for 31 years and in 1984 he retired from USS South Works Steel Company. He had a love of horses and a family tradition that they shared was attending races at the Balmoral Race Track. Ron enjoyed fishing with his family and spending time with his grandchildren.
Ron leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Pamela; children Kurt Westerlund of Calumet City, IL and Kara Westerlund of Las Vegas, NV; always a daughter in-law, Melissa (Randy) Kiaunis of Hobart, IN; grandchildren, Sarah Kiaunis, Kasey and Trey Westerlund, Mariah, Luke and Cade Logue, Eric Janaica, Pamela and Pearl Westerlund; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins; brothers, Larry Westerlund of Lake in the Hills, IL and Charles Westerlund of LaGrange, IL; sister, Carol (Herb) Westerlund-Ziegeldorf of Rogers Park, IL; sister-in-law, Paula Pell of Delphi, IN.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws; two sisters, Shirley Westerlund and Susan Westerlund; one brother; Richard Westerlund; brother-in-law, Bob Pell.
