Ronald R. Walls, 67, of South Jacksonville, died Friday, September 7, 2007, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born December 19, 1939, in Beardstown, the son of Howard and Mildred Lucille Varble Walls. He married Marsha Carter on May 22, 1980 in Springfield, and she survives.

He is also survived by one son and two daughters, Eric Walls of Springfield, Melissa (husband, Dennis) Dylo of Carpentersville and Stephanie (husband, Bryan) Hill of Ft. Benning, Ga.; four grandchildren, Michael Hill, Matthew Hill and Morgan Hill, all of Ft. Benning, Ga., and Molly Dylo of Carpentersville; two brothers, Herbert L. (wife, Eldena) Walls of Jacksonville and Maurice (wife, Patsy) Walls of Ruidoso, N.M. He was preceded in death by one brother, Leland Walls (surviving wife, Ruth of Decatur, Ga.).

Mr. Walls was a 1957 graduate of Jacksonville High School. He received his bachelors degree from Western Illinois University in 1998. He was a Sgt. Major in the Illinois Army National Guard, serving a total of thirty-three years, with twenty-two on active duty. He served as Operations Sgt. Major for Recruiting and Retention Command, retiring in 1998. Following his retirement, he began working as Building Inspector for the Village of South Jacksonville. He was a member of Central Christian Church, and was an avid sports fan, enjoying everything from NASCAR to area high school athletics.
