I am saddened to report the passing of our classmate, Roger Sellers, on May 13, 2021. Roger was born March 11, 1946. He was on the SPHS Wrestling Team. After graduation SPHS on June 9, 1964, Roger enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He attained the rank of Sergeant and between 1965 and 1969 served combat tours in Vietnam before service related injuries forced his retirement. For the next 30 plus years he worked for Vulcan Hart Industries at their facility off North Point Road. He also attended and graduated from community college and served area youth as a Scoutmaster in a local Boy Scout Troop. As a result of his service connected injuries and related disabilities, Roger lived at the Veteran’s Administration Loch Raven Rehabilitation and Assisted Living Facility for the past 14 plus years. Roger is survived by his only son from his first marriage, Roger Sellers, Jr., and Iona, his wife of 27 years.
Roger is best remembered for his positive attitude and smile. He frequently said to Iona: “You can complain. That’s your job. My job is being a Marine-Marines don’t complain.” For those of you who attended the SPHS Class Reunion in 2014, you will remember Roger as the one on the dance floor in his motorized wheel chair surrounded by girls and getting down with the tunes. It was a great evening for Roger and we were enriched by his ability to be with us one more time.
On May 13, 2021 Roger William Sellers, Sr. passed away; devoted husband to Iona Sellers (nee Gavel); beloved father to Roger William Seller, Jr. and his wife Tina, Charles Saunders III and his wife Clea, and Robin Saunders Coleman; cherished grandfather to Jasmine Sellers, Autumn Harvey, Colin and Zach Saunders, Spence Schuch, Tabatha Lablanc, Bruce Sellers, Gage Coleman, George Coleman, Jr. and Howard Sellers; loving son of the late Jacob F. Sellers, Sr. and the late Edna Gillam (nee Grinsley); dear brother to Jacob F. Sellers, Jr. and his wife Norma, and the late Bruce; close brother-in-law to Heather Grainger and her husband Mike.
Roger was a very generous person and enjoyed outdoor activities including camping, crabbing, fishing, along with going to flea markets. His other joys in life included shopping at the food pantry, being part of the “Royal Rangers”, and acting as a gladiator at the mid-evil times. Lastly, he was a avid lover of coins and was definitely a “Star Wars” enthusiast. He was a long time church member at the Assembly of God – loved his church family. Roger really appreciated the health care workers at the Loch Raven VA Center.
