Roger Lee Catron, husband, father, grandfather passed away unexpectedly on April 27, 2019. Delivered by Eunice Catron Bower (deceased) in Saltville, Virginia, he attended Rich Valley High School, graduating with the class of 1969 and continued his education at Georgia Southern University where he received his Bachelor of Science in 1977. Roger dedicated most of his life to serving his country in the United States Air Force, beginning in 1971. A Vietnam veteran stationed at Phu Bai Air Base, he directly supported the Operation Linebacker II bombing campaign of North Vietnam in December 1972 and remained there until the signing of the Paris Peace Treaty in 1973. Rising through the ranks to Major, Roger became Systems Director in 1993 for NAOC, the National Aiborne Operations Center where he helped direct communications support for “Night Watch”, the E4B’s 24 hour surveillance program that provides global travel and access for the President of the United States, the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and their communications with worldwide leaders. His work with the E4B’s operations provided Roger a great deal of pride as he worked along other members of U.S. Strategic Command. This assignment at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska concluded at the time of his retirement from the United States Air Force in 1995.
During this time, Roger’s daughters Rebecca and Caitlin played a major role in his life, as did his son Kelley, all children from previous marriages, who subsequently delivered loving grandchildren; providing a loving extension to his ancestral family tree.
Roger remained busy following his military career, transitioning into the data warehousing field and working for companies such as such as Delta Airlines and Blue Cross Blue Shield, both in Atlanta, Georgia. His sociable personality led to a natural progression into the world of real estate, where his role as Broker assisted many of the Century 21 clients in the Niceville, Florida area.
Newly retired, Roger received a wonderful delivery in 2009, when his son Turner was born, a gift that united Roger with his current wife Erica. The three officially united in 2011 and relocated to Massachusetts for his wife’s career in broadcasting. Realizing he missed the south, Roger convinced the family to relocate back to Florida, buying a home in the Viera section of Melbourne. Roger’s main focus remained with Turner recently, fulfilling his role as a highly involved Viera Hawk football team parent.
Only a couple weeks before his death, his wife Erica was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Carcinoma. It was Roger’s intent to become her main caretaker, and one week after his passing, Erica’s breast cancer was diagnosed as stage four. A new widow, Erica’s friends sought help from “Go Fund Me “to account for Roger’s absence.
