Roger James Burton Jr. was born to the late Roger James Burton Sr. and Florist Irene Burton on March 13, 1926 in Chicago Illinois. As a young adult, he attended John H. Francis Polytechnic High School is Los Angeles where he graduated in 1942. He then attended UCLA in Los Angeles to study Art and went into the Army Airforce traveling all over the world and participating in the Korean War. He later worked at Bethesda Naval Hospital where he retired on December 31, 1988.
After retiring, Roger did odd painting jobs for various friends and family with one of his closest friends, Mr. Jewel Nile Bowman. He also became more involved with the care of his special needs son.
Roger married and had two daughters and one son. His kids were raised with discipline and love and were always told to strive for excellence.
Roger was a faithful member of New Southern Rock Baptist Church for over 30 years until his illness.
When Roger became a Granddad, it was the most precious thing in the world to him. He loved all of his grandchildren with a compassionate heart. He had many stories of wisdom and guidance to share.
His family and friends will miss his laughter, stubbornness, singing, dancing, and his favorite phrase “I’m hanging in there”.
Roger is preceded in death by his beloved wife Joan Maria Burton; mother-in-law Juanita Delores Wright; beloved daughter Beverly Jean Burton Robinson; and sister-in-law Thelma Maxine Burton.
He leaves to celebrate his life: Children, Rogenia (William), Ricardo; two beloved brothers, Charles Sr. & Vincent (Odessa); sister-in-law Janet, brothers-in-law, Willie & Billy; four grandchildren, Reggie, William Jr., Michael, and Kayla. Adopted grandchild Cassie; one God Grandchild Chanel; four special extended family members Francis Stepney, Diana Maultsby, Evelyn Obgue, and Charles Anyaso; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
