Roger Darrell Whitehead, 74, passed away Friday, July 19, 2019 at his home in Coleridge, NC.

Roger was a native of Randolph County and lifelong resident of Coleridge. He was a faithful member of Concord United Methodist Church and graduated from Coleridge High School in 1963. After graduation he was drafted into the U. S. Army where he began to develop his interest in sports reporting on baseball, basketball and football. Roger was a sport events writer for the Pell’s Paper in Ramseur, the Randolph Guide, Liberty News and The Courier Tribune. He enjoyed keeping score for Eastern Randolph football with his longtime friend, Larry Ellison for over 40 years. He was currently assisting at Providence Grove High School keeping score for their sports program. Roger enjoyed coaching many baseball and basketball teams including youth basketball for Ramseur and Randolph YMCA. He was also a strong supporter of American Legion Post 81 where he enjoyed keeping score and riding the bus with the team to their games. He previously worked at Bossong Hosiery Mill and retired as a Walmart Associate with 22 years service.

Roger’s sweet spirit and quiet ways will be missed by his family, his Concord Church family, friends, and many others.   

A special appreciation from the family goes to Darrell Loflin – Proverbs 18:24, Bonnie Callahan, Michelle Aamland, Doris Brinkley, Hospice of Randolph, and the staff of Randolph Health.

He was preceded in death by his parents, June and Jessie Bray Whitehead

Survivors: brother, Eddie Whitehead, and wife, Rena, of Ramseur, nephew, Lee Whitehead, and wife, Erin, of Randleman, great niece, Erica Welch, of Coleridge, great nephew, Bryson Whitehead, of Randleman, and numerous cousins.
