Rodney E. Carmichael, of Middletown, beloved husband of Robertine (Ouellette) Carmichael for over sixty years, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 7th surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 11, 1926 in Houlton, ME, he was the son of the late Waldo and Agnes (Grant) Carmichael. Rodney grew up on a potato farm in Littleton, ME and his earliest education was in a one room school house that he skied to in the winter where his sister, Marie was the teacher. He was later educated in electronics and had his own business in Houlton, ME before moving to CT for a career with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Manufacturing. He met his wife on a blind date and never looked back. He loved being a father and that love was returned by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren tenfold. Along with his wife, he is survived by eight children, Janice Amara and her husband, Michael of Venice, FL, Susan Timbro and her husband, Nello of Cromwell, Rachel Rosenthal of Middletown, Roger Carmichael of Middletown, Joel Carmichael and his wife, Liz of Southington, Melvin Carmichael and his wife, Suzanne of Middletown, Denise Carmichael of Middletown and Michele Cotter and her husband, Tim of Middletown; fourteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and three nephews, Christopher Pickering of Greenwich, Emery Pickering of Austin, TX and Stephen Pickering of Denver, CO.
Besides his parents, Rodney was predeceased by his sister, Marie Carmichael Pickering and a nephew, Wyvern Pickering. The family would like to thank the entire staff of Water’s Edge Center for Health & Rehabilitation and Middlesex Hospice Unit who both gave Rodney wonderful and very compassionate care.
