Roberta (Knowlton) Parlin passed away on, Tuesday, December 26, 2017. She was born at home on April 8, 1930 in Dresden, ME and was the daughter of the late Sherman Hoyt Knowlton and Ethelwyn M. (Reed) Knowlton. Roberta graduated from Bridge Academy High School (Dresden, ME) in 1947, Farmington State Teachers’ College (Farmington, ME) with a B.S. in 1951, Columbia University Teachers’ College (Columbia, NY) with a M.A. in 1956, and she completed advanced graduate study at Central Connecticut State University (New Britain, CT) in 1981. After teaching forty very enjoyable years, she retired in 1991 from Newington High School (Newington, CT) having taught in Connecticut and California and in 1954-55, as a Fulbright Exchange teacher in Guildford Surrey, England. One highlight was a garden party at Lambeth Palace where she was presented to Queen Elizabeth I, the mother of the present Queen of England. Roberta loved to travel and toured over 30 countries of the world, including 49 states of the US, Canada, Mexico, Columbia, Aruba, Jamaica, Martinique, Bermuda, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, British Isles, Germany, Austria, Holland, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Lichtenstein, Italy and Switzerland. Roberta kept very busy and volunteered in many organizations including the Association of Retired Teachers of CT, Hartford County Retired Teachers Association, Henry Barnard Memorial Fund, Alpha Delta Kappa (sorority) and the Church of Christ Congregational in Newington. She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association and the Connecticut Education Association. Survivors include her very much-loved son, Leslie Parlin and wife, Kathryn of Lebanon, and her two deeply-loved grandchildren, Kelly Parlin of Providence, RI and Jeffrey Parlin of Bellevue, PA. She is also survived by her two sisters, Ramona Cook and Ella Hersom, both of Dresden, ME, her sister-in-law Cleora Knowlton of Wells, ME and many special nieces, nephews and friends. Roberta was predeceased by her sister, Nellie Niewola, of Coventry, and her brother John Knowlton, Sr. of Wells, ME. She will be missed by all who knew her. A visiting hour will begin at 10:00 a.m.
