Roberta Johnson Young
Roberta Young, 91, of Richburg (formerly of Carlisle, PA) died Sunday, July 17, 2011 at Chester Regional Memorial Hospital, Chester, SC.
Born on July 9, 1920 in Gettysburg, PA to Irvine and Barbara Johnson, Roberta was the oldest of three daughters. Her sisters (Caroline, Katherine and Betty Jayne) and parents moved to Carlisle, PA where Roberta attended the public schools of Carlisle. Roberta met James Garfield Young in Carlisle and their loving marriage yielded five children: Barbara K. Butts, deceased (and husband, James of Richburg, SC); Mary Y. Murdock (and husband, John D., deceased) of Richburg, SC; James I. Young (and wife, Ning) of Angeles City, Philippines; Donna M. Jones of Carlisle, PA; and Dennis L. Young (and wife, Vicki) of Brighton, CO.
Roberta was a community leader who dedicated much of her time to the young people of Carlisle. “Ms. Roberta” led Girl Scout troops and the Rangers Boys club for years. She was an active member at West Street AME Zion Church and served as the President of the Missionaries for many years. She retired from Piezo Crystal Company in 1982.
