Robert Thomas Buckler, 75, of Edwardsburg, passed away Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, after a brief illness. Nov. 15, 1938 – Jan. 5, 2014 Robert was born Nov. 15, 1938, in Louisville, Ky. Robert was predeceased by his parents, Henry Alvin Buckler and Leona (Smalley), along with his brother, John Buckler.
Robert received his undergraduate degree from Louisville’s Bellarmine University in 1960, and then went on to receive a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in 1964. While doing his post doctoral work at the University of Louisville he met his wife, Carol (Gruneisen), whom he married in 1966. He went to work for Miles Laboratories (Bayer) in Elkhart, Ind., in 1966 and retired in 1999.
Robert is survived by his wife, and four children and their spouses: Elizabeth (David) Sergio, Jennifer Buckler, Christopher Buckler (Heather) and Harold Buckler (Carly). Robert was happily married to Carol for 47 years and loved working in his garden, rooting for the Irish, traveling to Europe and Hawaii, and spending time with his children and grandchildren: Zachary Sergio, Jacob Sergio, Madeline Buckler, Isabelle Buckler, Jackson Buckler and Augustus Buckler.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that memorial contributions be made to Fernwood Botanical Gardens, 13988 Range Line Road, Niles, MI 49120.
