Robert S. McCulloch, Jr., 88, of Highland Avenue, Salem, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 3, 2012 at his home from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. He was born on December 27, 1923 in Salem, the son of the late Robert Haig Spittal McCulloch and Margaret Marshall McCulloch.

Mr. McCulloch graduated from Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, OH in 1942. He attended the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He subsequently left school to serve with the 7th and 15th Armies in Europe during World War II. He finished his formal education in Biarritz, France at the Biarritz American University. After the war, he returned to Salem and joined his father at the R.S. McCulloch Department Store. He succeeded his father as President until 1982, when the store was closed after 70 years in Salem.

Following that, Mr. McCulloch worked with his son, Robert S. McCulloch III for 30 years, as an Investment Advisor with Parker/Hunter, Inc. and successor firms. Like many of his friends, a number of whom were veterans of World War II, he lived life to the fullest. He was known for his quick wit, irreverence and loyalty to friends and family, no matter their station in life. He was also a loving grandfather who delighted in spending time with his grandchildren, whom he delighted in turn with his kindness, generosity and unforgettable sense of humor. Living in Salem the majority of his life, he was involved with a number of organizations.

He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Salem, was past president of the Salem Retail Merchants Association, past president and 50 year member of the Salem Rotary Club, past president of the Salem Golf Club, one of three founders of the Salem Area Visiting Nurses Association, past director of the First National Bank of Salem and Society Bank of Northeast Ohio, past president of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, past board member of the Salem Central Clinic and Northern Columbiana County Community Hospital.

He was a former trustee of the Columbiana County Motor Club (AAA) and served on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army. He was a member of the Princeton Club of New York City, the Sharon Social and Fishing Club of Sharon, Pa, The Charles H. Carey American Legion Post #56 and a 50 year member of the Perry Lodge F&AM #185.

Mr. McCulloch was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret McCulloch Null. He is survived by his devoted wife Jean (Harry) McCulloch whom he married on November 15, 1950; four sons, Robert S. McCulloch III (Deborah) of Salem, OH, John Harry McCulloch (Josee) of Niantic, CT, Mark William McCulloch (Gina) of Bedford, NH, and William Marshall McCulloch of Cleveland, OH; his grandchildren, Robert S. McCulloch IV of Baltimore, MD, Meredith Loring McCulloch of Cleveland, OH, John Michael Haig McCulloch of Easton, PA, Harrison Paul McCulloch of Bedford, NH, John Harry McCulloch, Jr. of Niantic, CT, and step-granddaughter, Angela Iozzo of Boston, MA.
