Robert “Gordon” Roberts, Jr. age 82 of Trussville, AL. “Daddy” Robert, Drew, and Taylor will be here in the morning. You are a great man. You’ve been a great DAD. I love you. I’m going to try and get some sleep now, you rest too. I’ll be right here.” Gordon Roberts passed away on December 28, 2012. He was an inspiration to his family and friends as he fought a very difficult battle against Dementia with courage, strength, and grace. Gordon was born in Mobile, Alabama on December 9, 1930. He was the oldest of 7 children. After graduating from Murphy High School he began his career at Alabama Power Company. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the United States Marines and served during the Korean War. He was a true hero being awarded the distinguished Purple Heart Medal, Korean Service Medal, national Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, UN Service Medal (Korea), and other military honors. The day after receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to his job at Alabama Power Company where he retired after 42 years. Dear friend and coworker William “Bill” Bass says “Gordon was loved by everyone at Alabama Power, he was so well thought of, he always wanted to help others.” Gordon loved the Lord with all his heart and was a devoted member of The Trussville United Methodist Church. Gordon loved music and could often be heard above the voices of the choir singing his heart out. He spent a lifetime of service to his family, country, and community. He was a member of the Lions Club, Rotary Club, Zamora Chanters, and other service clubs throughout his life. He enjoyed life to the fullest. His daughter and friends Jim Britain and Don Evans often accompanied him to Alabama Football games where they cheered on the Tide. Gordon often said he just wanted to live long enough to see his grandsons graduate from the University of Alabama. He did! Even when his eyesight became too bad to see the plays on the field he never wanted to miss a game. Gordon leaves behind to treasure his memory, his wife Verna Jones Roberts, son, Robert Gordon Roberts III (Pam), daughter, Jamie Roberts Mizzell (Mark). His pride and joy grandsons, Robert Gordon Roberts IV (Hila), David Andrew “Drew” Knox, Taylor Jackson Knox. Great granddaughters, Shaia Nancy Roberts and Jackson Ann Knox (Jesse Mizzell). His sisters and brother, Jo Ann Wellborne (Uncle Bill), Hettie Carol Roberts, Gerald “JR” Roberts, sister-in-law, Claire Wilson Roberts, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as devoted friends who stood beside him, Tara Woolen, Jeanne Speegle, William “Bill” Bass, Jerry “Bubba” Robbins, the late Bette “Granny” Oliver, and many other loving family members and friends. Gordon is welcomed into heaven by his parents, Gordon and Louise (Tillman) Roberts, Sr.. his brother, Charles Edward Roberts (Claire), sisters, Helen Hayes (Johnny) and Susan Miles (James).
