Robert Melvin “Mickey” Channell, Jr., 76,  died peacefully at his home on February 26, 2019, surrounded by his family. A longtime public servant, Mr. Channell served in the Georgia General Assembly representing State House District 120 from 1993-2015. Mr.

Mickey was born in Washington, Georgia, on September 9, 1942, to the late Robert Melvin Channell, Sr. and Pauline Jackson Channell Richardson.

While at the University of Georgia, Mickey met and married the former Carolyn DeVane of Adel, Georgia, his loving wife of 55 years. They made their home in Greene County where they raised four children. An accomplished businessman, Mickey built his businesses, Corner Pantry Food Marts and Channell Enterprises, in addition to working as co-owner of Channell Super Valu with his mother. Mickey began his political career serving on the Greene County Board of Commissioners from 1972 to 1980 and the Greene County Board of Education from 1980 to 1992.  He was a charter member of the Georgia Convenience Store Association and served as board president. He was also a member of the National Association of Convenience Stores and served as a board member.

During his 22 years in the Georgia General Assembly, Mr. Channell served as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Vice-Chairman of Appropriations, Chairman of the Health Subcommittee of Appropriations, Chairman of Industrial Relations and Secretary of Transportation.
