Robert McCullam passed away at 10:00 a.m. on May 13, 2013. He was 91. He is survived by his loving wife, Marion; his brother-in-law, John White of Riverside, California; his nephew, Brian White of Hornbrook, California; and his great-nephew, Joshpae White of Chico, California.
Bob was from a small town in northern Illinois and was an engineer in the US Navy during WWII. He participated in the Pacific campaign and the invasion of the Philippines. When Bob met Marion, (who, according to Bob, was riding in a convertible with her long blonde hair blowing in the wind in southern California!), she was a school music teacher. They fell in love and married. In their forties, they decided to join the Peace Corps and after serving four years in southern Chile (Puerto Montt), they decided to join CARE. Both Bob and Marion were devoted to CARE and served loyally for many years. They enjoyed assignments in Guatemala, Nigeria, Lesotho, Ecuador (Cuenca), India (Andhra Pradesh), and Bangladesh (Dhaka plus five years in Khulna). After retiring from CARE, they settled in Edgewater Landing, Florida, where they lived for more than 20 years. Last January, they moved in to an assisted living facility in Port Orange, Florida.
During their retirement, Bob and Marion were generous supporters of CARE. They treasured their association with CARE and attended every Old-Timer’s luncheon in New York until a couple of years ago, when it became too difficult for them to travel.
Their desire was that their nephew, Brian White, wait until both of them have passed on and, then take their ashes to Thailand, a country whose people and beauty they so enjoyeda”particularly, Phuket.
