DEACON ROBERT L. THOMAS, a passionate servant of God, devoted husband and father, caring and generous grandfather, uncle, play dad, god father, play brother and a true friend to many, departed this life on Thursday, July 24, 2014.

Robert Lloyd Thomas (Bob) was born September 17, 1926 to Rev. Frank Thomas and Mildred Wamsley Thomas in Kurthwood, Louisiana. His parents, all of his siblings (Lester, Eugene, Frank, Walter and Sam) and son, Kenneth preceded him in death. At the age of six his parents relocated to Clarksville, Texas.

Bob enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country proudly for twenty-two years. He served in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He enjoyed success as an extraordinary chef and celebrated boxer. He represented the Navy well as a boxer and won several awards including a position on the Olympic Boxing Team.

After receiving an honorable discharge, he made San Diego, California his permanent home. He was employed by Hazard Construction (eight years) and as a Warehouseman at 32nd Street (twelve years). After retirement from 32nd Street, Brother Thomas became the head chef and resident photographer at the Mt. Erie Christian Academy. No one loved and cared for the children more than he. He was there to be sure they were well nourished, but he also attended every school program to support and encourage them.

In 1970, he married the love of his life, Dorris McCormick.

Bob was an active, committed and dedicated participant in all areas of the Brotherhood Union. He enjoyed the work of the Mt. Erie Brotherhood (serving as treasurer), the Progressive District Association Brotherhood and the Brotherhood of the California Missionary Baptist State Convention. He also served as president of the President’s Council for many years before his health failed.

Deacon Thomas was devoted to the Deacon’s Ministry.

The few things Bob loved almost as much as he loved his family are the Mt.
