Robert Louis Thomas, Sr. 97, passed away Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at home. Cremation rites have been accorded and inurnment will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, near Van Meter at a later date.
Bob was born December 8, 1923, in Des Moines, to James and Grace (Hewitt) Thomas. He married Jean Lawson on February 10, 1946, in La Jolla, CA. Bob was an Officer for the Iowa Army National Guard for over 40 years, retiring as a Colonel. He enjoyed organizing Beaverdale neighborhood parties and then volunteering for the Johnston Historical Society and Westminster Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon for several years.
Bob is survived by his children, Robert L. “Robin” (Kathryn) Thomas Jr. of Burlington, IA, William E. “Bill” (Barbara) Thomas of Mishawaka, IN; and Margi (Dennis C. Cook) Cook of Laramie, WY; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Jean, his parents, and his siblings, James E. Thomas, Jr. Mary E. Lamar, and Katy Koll; and longtime companion, E. Jeanne Reames.
